What it is Gel Coat Biomaterials (a University of Tokyo spin-off) offers "Gel Coat™", a novel biomimetic amoeba hydrogel technology. It utilizes a unique zwitterionic hydrogel to create functional surfaces that prevent bio-adhesion.
Why it matters Biofouling and biofilms cause critical bottlenecks across various industries: clogging in complex scrubbers and water treatment pipes, thermal resistance in AI server liquid cooling plates, and marine biofouling on submerged sensors. Gel Coat™ addresses these pains by significantly reducing maintenance costs, preventing system failures in harsh environments.
How it works The technology leverages a biomimetic structure with hydrophilic units that form a strong hydration barrier, physically repelling unwanted substances like bacteria and marine organisms. Beyond passive anti-fouling, the hydrogel can encapsulate active agents such as heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Fe3+) for bactericidal effects, or specific enzymes for degrading target substances.
Proof to Date (A) Water Treatment & Air Conditioning: Effectively suppressed biofilm formation and protein adsorption in micro-channels and scrubber components where physical brushing is impossible. (B) Data Centers: Applicable to copper cold plates for AI server liquid cooling, preventing slime and corrosion scaling without increasing thermal resistance. (C) Marine Applications: Currently undergoing field PoCs in seawater, demonstrating suppression of marine biofouling on various substrates like underwater cameras, pipes, and sensors.
Next steps We are seeking joint research and development partners. Our business model focuses on custom-designing the hydrogel interface for your specific application, starting with a paid Feasibility Study (FS), followed by performance testing, technology transfer, and licensing. We standardly provide the materials for your in-house application.
Gel Coat Biomaterials, Inc. is a biotechnology startup founded in 2024 based on hydrogel technology developed by Professor Madoka Takai of the University of Tokyo. The company specializes in a proprietary biocompatible hydrogel, known as Gel Coat, which utilizes uniquely structured zwitterionic polymers to encapsulate and stabilize biomolecules such as enzymes, aptamers, nucleic acids, and cells. By surrounding these materials with a protective hydration layer, the technology enables long-term stabilization, immobilization, and thermal protection, effectively overcoming the inherent instability that often limits the application and duration of biological materials in various environments.
This technology addresses critical challenges in the bioindustry by allowing for more efficient use of biological materials. The company's solutions are targeted at applications including green chemistry to enhance sustainability, the long-term preservation of stem cells and organs, and the development of medical devices capable of generating power within the body for deep-tissue disease treatment. Supported by Series A financing from investors such as WASEDA University Ventures, the company aims to leverage its expertise in polymer chemistry and device technology to expand the utility of biomaterials across medical and industrial sectors.
