What it is Gel Coat Biomaterials (a University of Tokyo spin-off) offers "Gel Coat", a novel biomimetic hydrogel technology that acts as a protective "water barrier" to stabilize biopharmaceuticals and diagnostic reagents. The material is designed based on the mimicry of cell membrane lipid bilayers using a safe, zwitterionic structure.

Why it matters Biopharmaceuticals now account for over 50% of all drugs, yet 90% of them rely on strict freezing (e.g., -30°C) for transport and storage. This dependency causes over 5 trillion JPY in global losses annually, with 10% of drugs discarded due to degradation. By utilizing our technology, manufacturers can shift storage requirements from deep-freezing (-30°C) to standard refrigeration (4°C), room temperature, or even body temperature (37°C). This drastically reduces equipment/electricity costs, eliminates waste, and makes life-saving therapies accessible in low- and middle-income countries where cold-chain infrastructure is lacking.

How it works The biomimetic hydrogel envelops sensitive biological molecules—such as mRNA, DNA, LNPs, enzymes, vaccines, and monoclonal antibodies—in a robust hydration layer that suppresses thermal degradation. Because its chemical structure mimics natural cell membranes, the material is highly biocompatible. It demonstrates no cytotoxicity, shows no abnormalities in in-vivo implantation, is designed for high body excretion, and shares safety profiles with polymers already clinically approved for artificial joints.

Proof to date Thermal Stabilization: Proven to suppress degradation and maintain stability of biologicals at room temperature (RT) and up to 37°C, enabling easy transport and handling without strict temperature controls.

Broad Applicability: Capable of stabilizing a wide range of modalities, including insulin, peptides, hormones, and diagnostic kits at RT, as well as mRNA, DNA, and vaccines under refrigeration/long-term freezing.

New Formulation Enabler: The stabilization effect enables the development of next-generation modalities, such as microneedle skin patches, oral administration forms, and high-concentration injections.

Next steps Our primary target partners are Contract Development and Manufacturing Organizations (CDMOs). We aim to partner with CDMOs to integrate our stabilization technology into their processes, offering it as a new, differentiated product grade to mega-pharma clients. Our business model progresses from paid sample provision to paid joint development, contract development, and ultimately licensing and royalty agreements, sharing the massive cost-reduction value created.

About Gel Coat Biomaterials, inc.

Gel Coat Biomaterials, Inc. is a biotechnology startup founded in 2024 based on hydrogel technology developed by Professor Madoka Takai of the University of Tokyo. The company specializes in a proprietary biocompatible hydrogel, known as Gel Coat, which utilizes uniquely structured zwitterionic polymers to encapsulate and stabilize biomolecules such as enzymes, aptamers, nucleic acids, and cells. By surrounding these materials with a protective hydration layer, the technology enables long-term stabilization, immobilization, and thermal protection, effectively overcoming the inherent instability that often limits the application and duration of biological materials in various environments.

This technology addresses critical challenges in the bioindustry by allowing for more efficient use of biological materials. The company's solutions are targeted at applications including green chemistry to enhance sustainability, the long-term preservation of stem cells and organs, and the development of medical devices capable of generating power within the body for deep-tissue disease treatment. Supported by Series A financing from investors such as WASEDA University Ventures, the company aims to leverage its expertise in polymer chemistry and device technology to expand the utility of biomaterials across medical and industrial sectors.
