This innovative biomineralization technology enhances probiotic stability in low pH environments by encapsulating bacteria with biomineralized shells. It leverages soluble peptides and engineered strains to improve bacterial viability, offering applications in dietary supplements and functional foods.

Overview

This cutting-edge biomineralization technology is designed to significantly enhance the stability and viability of probiotics in harsh, low pH environments, such as those found in the gastrointestinal tract. By encapsulating probiotic bacteria with a biomineralized shell, this solution ensures the bacteria remain viable and effective, thus improving their health benefits when used in dietary supplements and functional foods.

Technical specifications

Two innovative approaches are utilized in this technology:

  • Soluble Biomineralizing Peptides: These peptides catalyze the encapsulation of probiotics, forming protective shells around the bacteria.
  • Engineered Probiotic Strains: Probiotic strains are engineered to display biomineralizing peptides on their surfaces, promoting natural encapsulation.

The encapsulation process involves creating shells with thicknesses ranging from 10nm to 1000nm. The viability of the bacteria is meticulously tested through incubation in low pH conditions or ex-vivo gastrointestinal liquids, followed by viability assessments using Flow Cytometry (FACS) and culture assays.

Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, indicating that it has been validated through controlled laboratory research. Further development and validation in real-world applications are planned to advance its readiness for commercial use.
