Breathable adhesive fluid barrier with integrated absorbent catchment layer

Technology

Company

Patent-pending multi-layer composite shield that eliminates the sweat-trap effect of traditional solid plastic backings. An elastomeric silicone perimeter adhesive chassis creates a liquid-tight border seal while leaving the central zone breathable, with an ultra-absorbent hydrophilic catchment layer laminated above to immobilize gravity-fed fluids instantly.

Overview

This innovation introduces a patent-pending multi-layer composite barrier designed for the personal care market. Unlike conventional products that rely on dense, non-breathable plastic sheets across the entire skin-contact surface, this device uses a flexible silicone perimeter adhesive chassis to create a liquid-tight border seal. The central zone remains highly breathable and flexible, conforming naturally to skin contours. Laminated directly above this breathable core is an ultra-absorbent, high-pile hydrophilic catchment material engineered to immobilize gravity-fed liquid streams on contact. The result is absolute moisture containment without the discomfort, dermal irritation, or sweating commonly associated with solid plastic backings.

Technical specifications

Key design features:

  • Elastomeric silicone perimeter adhesive chassis that frames the device and establishes a continuous liquid-tight border seal against the skin
  • Breathable central zone that allows air and natural skin moisture to escape freely, eliminating the sweat-trap effect of conventional plastic backings
  • Ultra-absorbent high-pile hydrophilic catchment layer (such as cotton terry cloth or high-pile nonwoven) laminated above the core to capture and immobilize gravity-fed liquid streams instantly
  • Multi-layer composite architecture that decouples liquid-lock functionality from a solid surface coating, distributing the barrier role between a targeted border seal and a high-capacity absorbent matrix
  • Scalable manufacturing compatibility with high-speed laminate packaging lines and steel injection tooling for elastomeric chassis frames
  • Material flexibility to incorporate biodegradable or sustainable plant-based absorbent fibers aligned with personal health and sustainability roadmaps
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently in early-stage development with foundational milestones completed. Phase 1 (intellectual property security) is complete, with U.S. patent pending status secured under Application Number 64/111,055. Phase 2 (CAD design and structural layout) is underway, with final multi-layer composition details and perimeter-adhesive footprint boundaries being locked in. Planned next phases include material validation and prototyping, including selection of skin-safe medical silicone formulations and benchmarking of fluid absorption rates across candidate nonwoven and natural cotton terry components, followed by tooling development and transition to high-volume laminate manufacturing for retail multi-pack distribution.
