A functional ingredient delivering butyrate through bacterial extracellular vesicles from GRAS bacteria, designed to support healthy weight management in dogs and cats. The cell-free platform enhances stability and cellular uptake, enabling lower effective doses, and can be incorporated into treats or pet foods without changing the animal's regular diet.

Overview

BioClé has developed a cell-free delivery platform that uses bacterial extracellular vesicles (bEVs) produced from GRAS bacteria to transport butyrate, a microbiome-derived metabolite with established roles in intestinal barrier function, metabolic regulation, fatty acid oxidation, and gut-mediated satiety pathways, including GLP-1 and PYY signaling. The platform is designed to protect butyrate from degradation during digestion, delivering it intact to intestinal cells where it can exert its metabolic effects.

The ingredient is formulated to be incorporated directly into treats, wet food, or dry food for dogs and cats, allowing pet owners to add the functional benefit without replacing the animal's regular diet. By improving delivery efficiency, the technology aims to achieve efficacy at a lower effective dose compared with free butyrate, creating a practical and cost-effective approach to weight management in pets.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Butyrate-loaded vesicles produced from a GRAS bacterial chassis, ensuring a cell-free, naturally derived product with a credible regulatory path
  • Demonstrated high particle yields and compatibility with lyophilization, supporting scalable production and ambient storage formats
  • Early in vivo studies in C. elegans show more than twice the biological effect of free butyrate and a reduction in fat accumulation of over 40%
  • Designed for incorporation into treats, wet food, and dry food; thermal retention testing at 100–140 °C is planned, with post-process application or protective coatings evaluated as needed

The development plan includes optimizing butyrate loading and formulation, assessing vesicle integrity, cargo retention, and biological activity under relevant temperature, moisture, and storage conditions, and confirming cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, and effects on metabolic and satiety pathways through in vitro assays.

Technology readiness level

The platform is currently at an early validation stage. The delivery advantage has been demonstrated in vitro and in a C. elegans model, but pet-specific efficacy, palatability, and gastrointestinal tolerance have not yet been established. A stage-gated plan is proposed: define the target product profile for treats, wet food, and dry food; optimize formulation and validate stability; conduct in vitro metabolic and satiety assays; run dose-ranging and palatability studies in dogs and cats; and complete a controlled feeding study comparing the product with free butyrate and placebo, measuring food intake, body weight, body fat, lean mass, body condition, activity, GLP-1, PYY, and metabolic markers.

About BioClé

BioClé is a biotechnology startup that has developed an intelligent delivery platform based on bacterial extracellular vesicles (bEVs). The technology is designed to enhance the stability, bioavailability, and targeted cellular uptake of bioactive compounds, which often lose efficacy due to degradation during digestion. By utilizing modified bacteria to produce these vesicles at scale, the company aims to solve significant challenges in the delivery of ingredients such as butyrate, allowing them to reach intestinal cells intact and active. The company employs synthetic biology and biological nanotechnology to create a delivery system that functions as a natural vehicle for health and nutritional applications.

Operating with a B2B business model, BioClé intends to partner with laboratories, nutraceutical companies, and food manufacturers by providing them with a technology platform to improve the performance of their functional products. By addressing the limitations of traditional delivery methods like capsules or liposomes, the company seeks to enable next-generation gut health solutions. Based in Rosario, Argentina, with an international outlook, BioClé was incubated at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Rosario (IBR) and is supported by investment firms including GRIDX. The company is actively validating its platform through both in vitro and in vivo studies to support commercial adoption.
