A novel tooth whitening solution using carbamide peroxide nanocarriers with desensitizing agents, offering enhanced stability and reduced sensitivity. The technology enables controlled release, efficient whitening at lower doses, and minimized side effects.

Overview

This advanced tooth whitening solution utilizes carbamide peroxide nanocarriers combined with desensitizing agents to provide a superior whitening experience. By embedding carbamide peroxide in a redesigned matrix, this technology shields the active ingredient from heat, light, and moisture, allowing for a controlled release at reduced doses. This innovative approach not only enhances whitening efficacy but also minimizes common side effects such as tooth sensitivity.

Technical specifications

The core of this solution lies in the encapsulation of carbamide peroxide within a novel nanocarrier system. The encapsulation addresses peroxide instability and user sensitivity by retaining 95% of the active ingredient after accelerated testing, compared to only 3% in non-encapsulated forms. The formulation is refined using Design of Experiments (DoE) to optimize polymer selection, CP:desensitizer ratios, and release profiles. The technology is being developed to transition to a water-based continuous process, which reduces capital risks and carbon footprint.

Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 6, the technology has undergone extensive validation phases, including efficacy tests, stability assessments, and in-vitro release studies. Future plans include further optimization and proof-of-concept studies, with the aim of developing a commercially viable product for over-the-counter or professional use.

About Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo

Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) is a comprehensive public, tuition‑free university with four campuses anchored in Vitória. The Maruípe campus houses the university hospital, enabling clinical research and translation within Brazil’s public health system. Industry engagement runs through a dedicated technology and innovation office that manages IP, licensing, and sponsored research, alongside a long‑standing incubator based in a UFES facility. Its Greater Vitória location—adjacent to Brazil’s port complex and heavy‑industry corridor—offers convenient access to industrial partners and logistics. Research is backed by competitive funding from national agencies such as CNPq, CAPES, and FINEP, and by the Espírito Santo research foundation, FAPES.
