Innovative catalytic process transforms methyl esters into linear alpha olefins using RuSn alloy catalysts and advanced dehydration techniques. Ideal for chemical manufacturing applications.

Overview

The catalytic transformation of methyl esters to linear alpha olefins offers a groundbreaking approach for the chemical manufacturing industry. Utilizing a RuSn alloy catalyst, this process achieves over 90% selectivity in converting oleic acid to oleyl alcohol, demonstrating significant oxophilicity. The method leverages either a double catalyst layer system or reactive distillation with decarboxylation, providing flexibility and efficiency in olefin production.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Catalyst System: Utilizes a RuSn alloy catalyst for high-selectivity conversion.
  • Process Options: Offers two primary approaches: a double catalyst layer for selective reduction and reactive distillation for efficient decarboxylation.
  • Analytical Equipment: Equipped with advanced analytical tools such as GC-MS, HPLC, and NMR for precise product analysis.
  • Optimization and Modeling: Includes catalyst condition screening, multiscale kinetic modeling, and software-enhanced analytics for efficiency.
Technology readiness level

This technology is at a TRL 3, indicating successful laboratory demonstration. Future plans include optimizing dehydration catalysts, technology transfer to continuous reactors, and eventual scaling to a pilot plant. The infrastructure to support these advancements is currently under development.
