Benanova Inc introduces a groundbreaking approach to fresh produce preservation through charge-neutralized biopolymer coatings. Developed by Prof. Orlin Velev's group, these coatings are designed to be environmentally friendly, utilizing common biopolymers to create films with exceptional oxygen barrier properties. The coatings are practically invisible and have demonstrated significant efficiency in prolonging the shelf life of produce like bananas by protecting them from spoilage. Technical specifications

The coatings are composed of biopolymer pairs that achieve complete mutual charge neutralization, resulting in films with very low oxygen permeability, high density, and mechanical stability. Two versions are being explored: multilayer coatings and biopolymer composite films reinforced with Soft Dendritic Colloids (SDCs). Both types exhibit high stability and antimicrobial properties. The efficiency relies on precise control of charge balance, which is sensitive to solution pH and deposition conditions. The research team has developed expertise in modeling and controlling these parameters to ensure optimal performance.

Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, the coatings have been validated in laboratory settings with promising results. Further validation will involve optimizing the charge balance, characterizing permeability, stability, and antimicrobial properties, as well as evaluating scalability and cost-effectiveness for commercial application.
