Discover chitin-based biodegradable coatings offering antimicrobial, UV-blocking, and gas barrier properties as sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging. Extend shelf life of produce by up to 7 times while reducing food waste and plastic pollution.

Overview

Chitin-based biodegradable coatings present a groundbreaking solution for sustainable packaging, offering antimicrobial, UV-blocking, and gas barrier properties. These coatings serve as a versatile alternative to conventional plastic packaging, significantly extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables by up to seven times. By maintaining a neutral pH, they are compatible with a variety of substrates such as paper, leather, glass, metals, and plastics. This innovation not only reduces food waste and plastic pollution but also aligns with scalable, sustainable packaging needs across diverse applications.

Technical specifications

The chitin-based coatings are derived from chitosan, a well-researched biopolymer known for its effectiveness in food packaging applications. Key features include:

  • Antimicrobial properties to inhibit spoilage
  • UV-blocking capabilities to protect contents
  • Effective gas barrier to extend freshness
  • Compatibility with various substrates like paper, leather, and metals
  • Enhanced strength, barrier performance, and thermal stability through nanocomposite integration The coatings have been validated in lab settings and real-world trials, demonstrating their potential for large-scale adoption in the packaging industry.
Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 6, the chitin-based coatings have undergone extensive lab and field testing. Validation processes are ongoing, including additional efficacy and safety studies, with plans for further scalability testing across multiple substrates. Pending regulatory approvals, Kitocoat AB is preparing for pilot trials with industry partners to refine commercial deployment.

About Kitocoat AB

A KTH Royal Institute of Technology spin-off founded in 2022 by a materials scientist and a biotech entrepreneur. Kitocoat is focused on fighting food waste through technology, and has received support from EU innovation programs. The team is working closely with the agricultural sector to pilot their coating in real supply chains.
