Company

Cruz Foam manufactures chitosan-based foam alternatives to expanded polystyrene (EPS) for sustainable packaging. The company has validated mechanical performance comparable to EPS, demonstrated certified compostability, and is developing surface treatments to achieve water and oil resistance while targeting cost parity with conventional EPS products.

Overview

Cruz Foam produces chitosan-based foam packaging designed as a sustainable alternative to expanded polystyrene (EPS). Chitosan, derived from crustacean shell waste, enables a regenerative material solution that addresses plastic pollution while delivering the protective performance required for packaging applications. The company has confirmed that its foams can achieve certified compostability and exhibit mechanical properties comparable to EPS, including tensile strength, elastic modulus, compression strength, and compression set.

The company is actively working on two critical commercialization milestones: achieving cost parity with conventional EPS products through supply chain optimization, and developing surface treatments to prevent water and oil absorption. These advancements position Cruz Foam as a viable drop-in replacement for EPS in protective packaging, cold chain, and food contact applications.

Technology readiness level

Cruz Foam's chitosan foam technology is at an advanced stage of development. Mechanical performance has been validated against EPS benchmarks, and compostability certification has been achieved for multiple product variants. Manufacturing processes including thermoforming, die-cutting, and laminating have been proven viable.

The primary remaining development work focuses on surface treatment to achieve water and oil resistance, followed by FDA food contact safety certification and BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) compliance. Once viable surface treatment methods are identified, the company plans to develop continuous and scalable manufacturing techniques for applying these treatments. Cost optimization through supply chain partnerships remains ongoing to achieve parity with conventional EPS pricing.
