University

A novel chitosan-based compound is being developed to improve iron binding in detergent formulations, offering a biodegradable alternative to traditional phosphonates. This solution aims to enhance detergent performance by reducing metal interference.

Overview

This innovative solution involves the development of a chitosan-based compound designed to enhance iron binding in detergent formulations. By modifying chitosan with carboxylic acids, the compound aims to selectively chelate iron (Fe³⁺) while minimizing interaction with calcium (Ca²⁺), thus improving the overall efficacy and sustainability of detergents. This biodegradable alternative to traditional phosphonates is expected to prevent metal-related interference in detergents, enhancing their performance and environmental profile.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Modified Chitosan: Uses carboxylic acids and/or aldehydes to improve selectivity for Fe³⁺.
  • Chelation Efficiency: High affinity for iron with reduced interaction with calcium, tested under typical detergent conditions (pH ≤10).
  • Comparison with Phosphonates: Performance benchmarking against standard phosphonates like HEDP and DTPMP.
  • Biodegradability: Offers a sustainable alternative to traditional metal chelants in detergents.
  • Validation Procedures: Involves synthesis, characterization (FTIR, NMR, SEM), batch sorption experiments, and detergent formulation testing.
Technology readiness level

This technology is at TRL 2, indicating that the concept and application have been formulated. Initial synthesis and characterization steps have been conducted, with future plans for sorption experiments and testing in detergent formulations.
