Innovative bio-based adhesives inspired by barnacle glue using synthetic proteins for temporary, tissue-compatible bonding, particularly in health and beauty applications such as artificial nails.
This research focuses on developing a novel bio-based adhesive inspired by the natural glue of barnacles. Leveraging the adhesive properties found in barnacle proteins, this solution aims to create non-toxic, tissue-compatible adhesives for health and beauty applications, such as bonding artificial nails. The adhesive works by enzymatically crosslinking collagen in fingernails with synthetic proteins, providing a strong, temporary bond.
Key features:
This innovative adhesive is currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, which involves active research and laboratory-scale production of the adhesive proteins. Further development and testing are planned to evaluate bond strength and tissue compatibility.
