Company

Combiotic™ is an antimicrobial solution designed to treat bovine mastitis during the dry period by targeting bacterial cell membranes, ensuring high selectivity and safety. It has undergone extensive preclinical testing and is moving towards clinical efficacy studies with a TRL of 5.

Overview

Combiotic™ is a novel antimicrobial treatment developed specifically to address mastitis in dry cows, a critical period for dairy cattle. By targeting bacterial cell membranes, which are distinct from mammalian cells, Combiotic™ ensures strong selectivity and safety. It not only reduces bacterial load and inflammation but also boosts glutathione levels in host cells, providing additional antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. The solution has been validated in vitro against major mastitis pathogens and confirmed for safety in third-party biocompatibility and toxicity studies.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Targets and disrupts bacterial cell membranes, minimizing impact on mammalian cells
  • Demonstrates broad-spectrum antimicrobial, antibiofilm, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity
  • Validated in over 18,000 preclinical tests against mastitis pathogens
  • Avoids milk withdrawal and antibiotic residues, addressing antibiotic resistance concerns
  • Proposed to be tested in a dry cow mastitis model involving non-lactating dairy cows, with efficacy assessed by bacterial clearance and inflammation reduction
Technology readiness level

Combiotic™ is currently at Technology Readiness Level 5, indicating that it has been validated in relevant environments and is ready for further clinical efficacy studies. This next phase will involve establishing a dry cow mastitis challenge model to evaluate its therapeutic potential under realistic field conditions.

About COMBio
