Development of biodegradable composite films using polyethercarbonates and polylactides for eco-friendly food packaging. This innovative material offers excellent barrier properties and compostability, ideal for sustainable packaging solutions.
The proposed solution involves the development of composite films utilizing polyethercarbonates as barrier materials, combined with support plastics like polylactides to provide mechanical strength. This innovation targets the food packaging industry with a focus on sustainability and biodegradability. Polyethercarbonates are synthesized by copolymerizing carbon dioxide with epoxides or cyclic anhydrides, offering excellent barrier properties. By pairing with polylactides, the composite films maintain both strength and biodegradability, making them ideal for eco-friendly packaging solutions.
This project is currently at Technology Readiness Level 2, indicating that it is in the early stages of formulation and design. Initial polymer production is planned, with further validation involving external collaborations for film processing and food safety analysis.
Ruhr‑Universität Bochum is a large, comprehensive public research university in Germany’s Ruhr metropolitan region. Industry engagement is embedded through co‑located applied research institutes and shared labs, a nearby research and technology park, and a startup center for spinouts and collaboration. Clinical translation is enabled by a university hospital network linking multiple teaching hospitals, providing access to patients, trials, and real‑world validation environments. Research is supported by competitive funding from the German Research Foundation, federal and state ministries, and European Union programs.
