Innovative cellulose-based coatings that replace plastics and PFAS in packaging, offering comparable moisture, grease, and oxygen resistance with full industrial compostability in 90 days.

Overview

Greenshoot Materials presents an innovative solution in sustainable packaging with its compostable cellulose coatings. These coatings are designed to replace traditional single-use plastics and PFAS-based coatings without compromising on performance. They are engineered to meet or exceed key functional metrics such as moisture resistance, grease resistance, and oxygen permeability, making them ideal for various packaging applications. The coatings are fully compostable under industrial conditions within 90 days, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Technical specifications
  • Moisture Resistance: Achieves a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 3 g/m²/day, surpassing commercial standards.
  • Grease Resistance: Scores 12/12 on the TAPPI-T559 test, ensuring protection against grease penetration.
  • Oxygen Permeability: Delivers exceptional barrier properties with an oxygen transmission rate of 4 cc/m²/day.
  • Mechanical Properties: Young’s modulus of 5.84 GPa and strong adhesion performance with cross-hatch ratings of 4B-5B.
  • Manufacturing Compatibility: Compatible with existing equipment, facilitating easy adoption.
Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, our cellulose coatings have been validated in laboratory settings and are undergoing further pilot testing. We are actively seeking partnerships to scale production and enhance market validation, with plans to achieve full compostability certifications and food safety approvals within the next year.

About Greenshoot Materials

Greenshoot Materials develops high-performance, plant-based packaging designed to replace single-use plastics. The company utilizes non-toxic cellulose to create fiber-based products that mimic the protective barrier properties of traditional plastic, including moisture and oxygen barriers and grease resistance, without the use of PFAS. These materials are designed to be fully compostable, supporting a circular economy by ensuring packaging returns safely to the earth.

The company focuses on addressing the plastic pollution crisis by providing sustainable alternatives for industries such as food service and pet packaging. Their technology aims to improve the consumer experience by providing a plastic-like texture while offering functional benefits, such as extending the shelf life of fresh food. By creating high-strength, compostable solutions, Greenshoot Materials enables businesses to transition away from single-use plastics without compromising on performance or packaging utility.
