Compostable recycled pla-graphene oxide composite packaging

Overview

Ex Seed has developed an innovative, eco-friendly packaging solution by creating compostable, recycled composites of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with graphene oxide (GO). This novel material offers a sustainable alternative to traditional aluminum foil used in food packaging. The PLA-GO composite combines enhanced mechanical and barrier properties with environmental benefits such as accelerated degradation and reduced water vapor permeability. The composite's covalent structure ensures food safety, addressing sustainability challenges in packaging materials.

Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 3, indicating it is in the early stages of experimental proof of concept, with further validation underway through industrial and home composting tests in collaboration with Kraft.
