University

A validated methodology for characterizing variety-specific NPK and micronutrient requirements in field crops. Developed through multi-year studies on Ukrainian and European winter wheat varieties, the approach enables tailored fertilization strategies for improved crop nutrition management.

Overview

This solution provides a scientifically validated methodology for testing and characterizing the specific nutrient requirements of crop varieties, addressing a key challenge in precision agriculture. Different crop varieties have distinct nutritional needs for macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and micronutrients (zinc, copper, manganese, iron, cobalt), yet these differences are often obscured by varying weather conditions during the growing season. The methodology enables researchers and agronomists to identify variety-specific nutritional profiles, supporting more accurate and efficient fertilization programs tailored to each variety's needs.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Multi-year field validation across 2016-2020 spring-summer vegetation periods
  • Comprehensive nutrient profiling covering N, P, K, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, and Co
  • Tested on 12 winter wheat varieties (4 Ukrainian and 8 European breeding origins)
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate nutrient consumption patterns between variety groups and within individual varieties
  • Generalizable testing framework applicable to other field crops beyond wheat

Research findings include:

  • Ukrainian varieties generally exhibit lower potassium demand compared to European varieties
  • Accumulation of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in aboveground plant parts is influenced by both spring-summer weather conditions and varietal nutrition specificity
  • European varieties demonstrate higher manganese uptake levels during plant development
Technology readiness level

The methodology has been validated through extensive multi-year field studies on winter wheat varieties. The research team plans to extend the approach to additional major crops, including corn, soybeans, sunflowers, and peas, through two-year variety testing trials on research plots in Ukraine. The expected outcomes include a formalized methodology for these additional crops along with preliminary assessments of fertilization requirements for various varieties.
