Innovative cellulose composite films with curcumin and chitosan for enhanced oxygen and moisture barriers in food packaging. These films offer antimicrobial, antioxidant properties and are biodegradable, providing a sustainable alternative to conventional packaging.

Overview

Curcumin encapsulated in cellulose composite films represents a groundbreaking approach in sustainable packaging technology. By integrating curcumin and chitosan into cellulose-based films, this solution enhances oxygen and moisture barrier properties, crucial for food packaging. The films offer antimicrobial and antioxidant properties due to curcumin, while being biodegradable and recyclable, aligning with eco-friendly and regulatory standards. This innovation promises improved stability and controlled release of active compounds, providing a superior alternative to traditional packaging materials.

Technical specifications

The composite films are created using a solvent casting technique, optimizing cellulose-chitosan blends in various ratios to enhance performance. Curcumin is microencapsulated with β-cyclodextrin to improve stability and controlled release. These films undergo rigorous testing for mechanical strength, moisture and oxygen barriers, and biodegradability. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities are verified, alongside cytotoxicity testing to ensure biocompatibility. The films are also tested for recyclability with paper and fiber systems, thermal stability, surface morphology, and water solubility.

Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 3, indicating it is in the active research and development phase with experimental proof of concept achieved.
