Chemistry-driven synthesis of modified phytosiderophore compounds designed to chelate iron and other reactive metals, enabling efficient transport into plants without triggering reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage. Targets improved plant nutrition under iron-limiting conditions such as alkaline, high-pH soils.

Overview

This solution addresses a critical challenge in agriculture and plant nutrition: iron and other essential mineral deficiencies caused by limited bioavailability in soils, particularly alkaline and high-pH soils where iron becomes insoluble and inaccessible to plants. The offering centers on custom-synthesized compounds derived from modified phytosiderophores—natural molecules that plants secrete to acquire iron from the environment. By redesigning these molecules through a chemistry-driven synthesis approach, the compounds are engineered to chelate iron and other reactive metal species in a form that plants can readily absorb, while avoiding the generation of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can damage plant tissues. The result is improved plant growth and nutrition under conditions where conventional approaches fall short.

Technical specifications
  • Chelation-based delivery: Compounds are designed to bind iron and other reactive metal species, solubilizing them for plant uptake
  • ROS-safe transport: Modified molecular structures minimize oxidative stress reactions during mineral transport into plant tissues
  • Chemistry-driven synthesis: Compounds are produced through controlled synthetic chemistry rather than biological extraction, enabling consistency and scalability
  • Targeted application: Specifically intended for iron-limiting soil conditions, including high-pH and alkaline soils where iron deficiency is prevalent
  • Based on phytosiderophore scaffolds: Built upon modified forms of natural plant iron-acquisition molecules, leveraging evolved biological mechanisms
Technology readiness level

The research is at an early-stage discovery and development phase. The hypothesis has been formulated based on understanding of phytosiderophore biology and iron deficiency challenges in alkaline soils. Future validation will involve synthesis of candidate compounds followed by testing their efficacy in improving plant growth and nutrition under iron-limiting conditions. The work is currently positioned for laboratory-scale synthesis and initial biological validation before advancing toward field testing and commercial development.
