A soil improvement method using deep application of organic fertilizers (cow, sheep, and pig manure) in vineyards to enhance grape yield, aroma, sugar content, soluble solids, and solid-acid ratio. The approach improves soil microbial community structure, pH, and organic matter content, validated in Shanzhou District, Sanmenxia City, Henan Province.

Overview

This solution presents a deep application method for organic fertilizers in vineyards using cow, sheep, and pig manure to significantly improve grape yield and quality. The approach enhances key fruit characteristics including aroma, sugar content, soluble solids, and the solid-acid ratio, all of which directly contribute to higher commercial value. Beyond fruit quality, the method improves soil health by generating active substances that positively reshape the soil microbial community, raise soil pH, and increase organic matter content. The technique is particularly relevant for grape production, which shows one of the strongest correlations between organic fertilizer use and improvements in fruit quality and market value among agricultural products.

Technical specifications
  • Fertilizer types: Cow manure, sheep manure, and pig manure applied at depth
  • Application equipment: Offset-type organic fertilizer deep application machine that creates ditches 40 cm deep and 30 cm wide, positioned 50 cm from the grapevines
  • Soil improvements: Increased soil pH, higher organic matter content, and improved microbial community structure
  • Crop benefits: Balanced root micro-ecology supporting normal crop growth, with single grapevine yields reaching up to 119 bunches in validated trials
  • Target crop: Seven-year-old Red Globe grape variety
Technology readiness level

The method has been validated through soil improvement measures implemented in vineyards in Shanzhou District, Sanmenxia City, Henan Province, where grape growth reached the best level since planting. A five-year comparative study is underway using a 10-mu vineyard divided into a control group (no organic fertilizer) and an experimental group (with organic fertilizer), with measurements of grape quality and soil characteristics being collected to further quantify the benefits.

About China Agricultural University

China Agricultural University is a leading public research university in Beijing that specializes in agriculture while drawing on broad cross‑disciplinary capacity. Industry collaborates through experimental farms and field stations for piloting and validation, and through a university science park that hosts a platform for showcasing and transacting research outputs. The university’s Science and Technology Backyard model embeds researchers in rural cooperatives, accelerating adoption and supply‑chain impact. Research is supported by competitive funding from national agencies such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology, along with Ministry of Education and regional programs. A dedicated technology transfer office advances IP protection, licensing, and partnerships within the science park.
