We have developed a device for collecting exhaled aerosols from mechanically ventilated patients. This device has been tested on the bench, using ex vivo lung models, and through small clinical studies in healthy subjects. We are interested in collaborating to further develop our device and to develop biomarkers that could be measured from the aerosol samples collected by the device. Applications could include the diagnosis or ventilator associated pneumonia or ARDS or other biomarkers of lung health.

The University of Pittsburgh is a large, comprehensive public research university anchored in an urban innovation corridor with a strong translational focus. Integration with UPMC, a leading academic medical center, enables clinical studies, access to broad patient populations, and co-located clinical–engineering labs that shorten paths from discovery to deployment. A nearby research and technology district, extensive core facilities, and an engineering co-op program give companies entry points for prototyping and talent pipelines. Research is supported by competitive federal funding from agencies such as NIH, NSF, DoD, and DOE. A dedicated technology transfer office provides IP strategy, licensing, startup support, and contracting for industry partners.
