Microbial endophyte strains isolated from arid-climate grasses that enhance maize drought tolerance by acting in the leaf growth zone. A data-driven screening platform identifies synergistic bacterial combinations to improve cell division, leaf elongation, and oxidative stress protection under drought.

Overview

This research program delivers a curated collection of bacterial and fungal endophyte strains that promote drought tolerance in maize by acting directly within the leaf growth zone. Strains are isolated from grasses that thrive in arid environments and have demonstrated the ability to enhance leaf elongation in maize seedlings under standardized drought conditions. By integrating molecular, metabolic, and physiological data, the program applies a machine-learning approach to predict and validate synergistic strain combinations that deliver superior growth promotion under water-limited conditions.

The solution addresses a critical agronomic challenge: maintaining maize productivity as drought events become more frequent and severe due to shifting climatological conditions. The targeted mechanism, interference with cell division and expansion in the meristem combined with elevated antioxidant activity, offers a biological route to protect yield without relying on additional irrigation or conventional breeding cycles alone.

Technical specifications
  • Endophyte library: Bacterial and fungal strains isolated from leaves of grasses growing in arid conditions, with confirmed colonization of the maize leaf growth zone.
  • Validated hits: Two unique bacterial strains from an initial eight-strain screen significantly enhanced leaf elongation rate under drought; genomic analysis indicates they belong to different bacterial families.
  • Mechanistic action: Strains reduce the impact of drought on cell division in the meristem and increase antioxidant levels, supporting both growth and oxidative stress protection.
  • Multi-omics platform: Integrated molecular, metabolic, and physiological analysis of plant responses enables data-driven selection of promising strains and combinations.
  • Combinatorial screening: Planned evaluation of at least 50 newly isolated strains across control, mild, and severe drought conditions, with genome sequencing and mRNA profiling of the growth zone for the top 10 performers.
  • Synergy prediction: All 15 binary combinations of the 6 strongest strains will be tested experimentally, with results used as training data for machine-learning models that predict phenotypes for additional binary, triple, and quadruple combinations.
Technology readiness level

The program is at an early-to-mid stage of development. Two drought-promoting bacterial strains have already been identified and genomically characterized, and a multi-level analytical platform is operational. The next phase involves scaling the strain library, performing transcriptomic and physiological characterization of additional growth-promoting strains, and validating machine-learning-predicted combinations experimentally. The technology is positioned for collaborative development toward agricultural application rather than immediate commercial deployment.
