Biodegradable food packaging made from PVA-based nanocomposite films reinforced with natural fibers such as wheat husk, coconut fiber, and aloe-vera. The solution reduces plastic waste, lowers carbon footprint, and supports composting while preserving food quality and freshness.
This project develops biodegradable food packaging designed to replace conventional single-use plastics in the food industry. The solution addresses the growing global plastic waste crisis by offering packaging materials derived from renewable, plant-based resources that break down naturally without harming the environment. The packaging is intended to serve businesses seeking sustainable alternatives that preserve food freshness and quality while reducing environmental impact across the product lifecycle.
The core value proposition centers on replacing petroleum-based plastics with biodegradable composite films that combine polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with natural fibers such as wheat husk, coconut fiber, and aloe-vera. This approach reduces plastic waste in landfills and oceans, lowers the carbon footprint associated with packaging production and transportation, and enables responsible end-of-life disposal through composting. The project also aims to educate consumers and promote sustainable purchasing behavior.

The project is currently in the research and material development phase. Work to date includes literature surveys of polymer electrolyte systems, procurement of chemicals and minor equipment, and preparation of PVA-based nanocomposite polymer membranes with natural fiber reinforcement. Ongoing activities involve optimizing film formulations, conducting mechanical and functional testing, and performing detailed characterization studies. Future phases include consumer perception research, education initiatives, and scaling evaluation for cost-effective manufacturing. The technology has not yet reached commercial deployment.
