Company

Biofertilizer technology using microbial inoculants to reduce mineral fertilizer requirements in basil crops while improving drought tolerance, lowering production costs, and decreasing environmental impact.

Overview

This solution leverages beneficial microorganisms to improve the sustainability and productivity of basil cultivation. By applying specific microbial inoculants, growers can reduce dependence on nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers, lower input costs, and enhance plant resilience to drought stress caused by climate variability. The technology addresses key challenges in basil production, including excessive nitrogen fertilizer use, soil erosion, water pollution, and limited understanding of phosphate nutrition management. It offers an eco-efficient pathway for producers seeking to maintain yields while minimizing environmental footprint.

Technical specifications

Microbial strains under investigation:

  • Azospirillum brasilense D7
  • Rhizobium sp. B02
  • Herbaspirillum sp. AP21
  • Bacillus sp. XT14
  • Two microorganisms contained in the Monibac biofertilizer

Key features:

  • Plant growth promotion validated in cotton, maize, rice, kikuyu grass, raygrass, and red clover intercropping systems
  • Potential to reduce nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer doses
  • Mitigation of drought and saline stress effects on crops
  • Prototype alginate microcapsule formulation for strain delivery and co-inoculation
  • Randomized experimental design evaluating fertilization doses and strain combinations
Technology readiness level

The technology is at the experimental validation stage. Prior studies in other crops have demonstrated the plant growth-promoting potential of the candidate strains. Current and future validation activities include controlled trials testing fertilization doses and microbial combinations, stress-response evaluations with and without drought conditions, and on-farm validation at producing farms using prototype alginate microcapsule formulations. The reduced fertilization rate will be defined based on trial outcomes, with co-inoculated strains advancing toward farm-level validation.

About Corporación Colombiana de Investigación Agropecuaria

AGROSAVIA is a Colombian decentralized public entity of mixed non-profit participation dedicated to agricultural science, technology, and innovation. The organization focuses on generating scientific knowledge and developing agricultural technology through research, technological adaptation, and the dissemination of technical expertise. Its operations are organized into specialized innovation networks, including cacao, fruits, vegetables, livestock, permanent crops, and roots and tubers. By bridging the gap between advanced research and practical application, AGROSAVIA develops improved crop varieties, such as biofortified beans and sugarcane, and establishes integrated management protocols to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.

These efforts are vital for Colombian agricultural producers, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to improve competitiveness, ensure sustainable natural resource management, and raise their quality of life. Through initiatives like field schools and the provision of technical assistance, the corporation facilitates the transfer of technology and information to small-scale farmers. By fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, AGROSAVIA acts as a key driver for technical change in the national agricultural sector, helping producers modernize their practices and address challenges related to climate resilience and food security.
