Overview

The University of Massachusetts Lowell is pioneering the development of eco-friendly multilayer films designed for sustainable food packaging. These films utilize biodegradable polymers to create a packaging solution that aligns with circular economy principles. By combining polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-valerate) (PHBV), this research aims to provide packaging with effective barrier properties against moisture and gases while ensuring full compostability and enzymatic deconstructibility.
