A research collaboration to adapt and validate Effective Microorganisms (EM) technology—originally developed for tropical climates—for use in northern climate agriculture. The project seeks partners to develop application methods, provide testing equipment, and fund key personnel for a 1-year study focused on optimizing EM use in cooler temperatures.

Overview

Effective Microorganisms (EM) is a mixed culture of beneficial live microorganisms originally isolated from fertile soils and developed over 40 years ago by Dr. Teruo Higa in Japan. The technology is designed to improve crop production by enhancing soil health, suppressing plant pathogens, solubilizing soil minerals, conserving energy, balancing soil microbial ecology, and improving photosynthetic efficiency and biological nitrogen fixation. While EM has demonstrated value in tropical and subtropical climates, its adoption in northern agricultural regions remains limited due to temperature constraints. This research initiative aims to adapt EM technology for use in cooler climates, where the microorganisms become active above 6°C and perform optimally between 20–30°C.

The project seeks partners to support the development of practical application methods for open-field use in northern conditions, supply testing equipment, and provide funding for key personnel over an estimated 1-year validation period.

Technical specifications
  • Microbial composition: A mixture of live natural cultures of beneficial microorganisms isolated from fertile soils
  • Temperature activation threshold: Microorganisms become active above 6°C
  • Optimal performance range: 20–30°C
  • Functional benefits:
    • Suppression of plant pathogens and disease-causing agents
    • Solubilization of soil minerals for improved nutrient availability
    • Conservation of energy in the soil-plant system
    • Maintenance of microbial and ecological balance in soil
    • Increased photosynthetic efficiency
    • Enhanced biological nitrogen fixation
  • Application context: Designed for open-land agricultural use in northern climates, requiring adapted application technologies
Technology readiness level

The researcher has been testing EM since 2012, building a foundation of practical experience with the technology. However, widespread adoption among agricultural farmers remains limited, particularly in northern climates where temperature conditions differ significantly from the technology's tropical origins. The current research initiative represents a focused effort to bridge this gap by developing and validating application methods suited to cooler temperature ranges. The study is estimated to require 1 year to complete and is actively seeking collaborative partners for technology development, equipment provision, and personnel funding.

About NPO Veggies Cultivation

NPO Veggies Cultivation is an Estonian research and development organization founded in 2021 that specializes in vegetable agrotechnics and sustainable agricultural solutions. The company conducts research to optimize vegetable crop production, improve plant health, and address physiological deficiencies in crops, such as calcium deficiency in leafy vegetables. They offer a range of services including expert consultations, educational programs, training workshops, and the organization of agricultural conferences and study tours. By collaborating with research institutions and industry stakeholders, the organization aims to bridge the gap between scientific innovation and practical farming, introducing modern technologies to growers globally.

For farmers, researchers, and hobby growers, NPO Veggies Cultivation provides evidence-based insights intended to increase productivity and promote environmentally responsible farming practices. The organization has engaged in projects such as cereal production technology improvements, utilizing scientific methodology to validate the impact of fertilizers and soil amendments like vermicompost on crop yields and nutrient content. Through these initiatives, they support the agricultural sector in making data-driven decisions, offering resources that range from published books on sustainable cultivation to actionable technical advice for crop management.
