Developing a static headspace gas chromatography (GC) method for accurate hexanal quantification in dry animal proteins. This efficient approach requires minimal sample preparation and no additional solvents, providing high sensitivity and selectivity with MS detection.
Plinius Labs presents an innovative method for quantifying hexanal in dry animal protein matrices using static headspace gas chromatography (GC). This technique offers a streamlined approach with minimal sample preparation, eliminating the need for additional extraction solvents or derivatisation agents. By gently heating the protein matrix to release hexanal, the method achieves high selectivity and sensitivity, detecting hexanal in the 3–10 ppm range with a limit of quantification (LOQ) of ≤ 3.0 ppm. This efficient process supports rapid analysis with a total runtime of 30 minutes, enabling the processing of at least 10 samples per day and reducing operational costs.
Currently at Technology Readiness Level 2, this method is in the proof-of-concept stage. Future validation steps include method optimization for sensitivity, followed by a short validation protocol. This protocol will involve control sample analysis, laboratory spiked samples, calibration verification with certified reference materials, and method blanks to ensure no background interference. The anticipated timeline for these validations is approximately 3 months.
