AI-driven plant electrophysiology platform that detects onion sprouting weeks before visual symptoms appear. By monitoring electrical signals in stored onion bulbs, the technology enables storage operators and processors to optimize inventory management, reduce waste, and improve quality control across the storage cycle.

Overview

This solution applies plant electrophysiology combined with machine learning to predict onion sprouting up to several weeks before any visible signs appear. Sprouting during storage is a major source of post-harvest loss for onion producers and processors, leading to reduced marketable yield, quality degradation, and economic waste. By detecting metabolic changes that precede sprouting, this technology offers an early warning system that enables proactive storage management decisions.

The approach is grounded in the principle that increases in metabolic activity prior to sprouting involve the breakdown of storage substances and the translocation of ions, sugars, and other charged biomolecules to developing organs. Plant electrophysiology is inherently sensitive to these translocation events, making it possible to capture electrical signatures that occur before sprouts become visible. Machine learning models trained on these biosignals can then identify the onset of sprouting in its earliest stages.

Technical specifications

Core technology:

  • Real-time electrophysiological monitoring using electrodes placed on plant tissue to capture electrical activity
  • Machine learning algorithms trained to recognize electrical patterns associated with pre-sprouting metabolic changes
  • Continuous 24/7 biosignal interpretation platform

Validation approach:

  • Electrode placement optimization: comparison of four electrode locations on onion bulbs to identify tissues where sprouting-related electrical activity emerges earliest, with 8 bulbs per location monitored over 4 weeks
  • Long-term storage monitoring: recording onions across one or more varieties under two typical storage conditions, with 32 bulbs per variety monitored over a full 6-month storage cycle
  • Algorithm refinement: development and training of machine learning models to predict sprouting ahead of visual signs
  • Processor validation: confirmation of model performance in a follow-up trial with onion industry partners

Key features:

  • Non-invasive monitoring compatible with standard storage environments
  • Early detection capability demonstrated in prior trials on potato tubers, where sprouting was predicted 1–3 weeks in advance
  • Temperature-responsive detection: storage temperature changes produced corresponding shifts in electrical pattern timing, enabling condition-specific calibration
  • Cross-species applicability: similar electrophysiological patterns observed in asparagus storage roots recovering from winter dormancy, supporting transferability to onions
Technology readiness level

The underlying electrophysiological monitoring platform is commercially operational and has been deployed internationally for crop health diagnostics including stress, disease, nutrient imbalance, and drought detection. The onion sprouting prediction application is at an early validation stage, building on validated proof-of-concept results from potato tuber trials. The planned 12-month project encompasses two full storage cycles and will progress from electrode placement optimization through algorithm development to processor-level validation. Successful completion will establish readiness for pilot deployment with onion storage operators and processors.
