The Electrostatic Spray Drying (ESD) technology offers an efficient solution for processing fermentation-derived lipids. It enables the conversion of lipids into stable powders with high oil retention, reducing energy usage and solvent loss compared to traditional methods.

Overview

The Electrostatic Spray Drying (ESD) technology provides an innovative approach to processing fermentation-derived lipids by transforming them into free-flowing powders or concentrated granules. This method is designed to replace conventional energy-intensive concentration and dehydration processes, such as evaporation and freeze drying. By utilizing a food-grade carrier like maltodextrin, gum arabic, or modified starch, the lipid-rich phase is formed into a stable oil-in-water emulsion, which is then dried under nitrogen at moderate temperatures. This process not only enhances efficiency but also reduces steam and power demand, solvent loss, and improves handling, making it a scalable and lipid-compatible solution.

Technical specifications
  • Low-temperature drying: Utilizes moderate temperatures to dry emulsions, preserving the integrity of the lipids.
  • Food-grade carriers: Incorporates carriers such as maltodextrin, gum arabic, or modified starch to stabilize emulsions.
  • Scalability: The process is adaptable to existing lipid-processing lines and is compatible with current industrial spray drying systems.
  • Energy efficiency: Reduces steam and power consumption compared to traditional methods.
  • Improved handling: Produces free-flowing powders that are easier to handle and store.
Technology readiness level

The electrostatic spray drying technology is currently at Technology Readiness Level 4. Proof of concept has been established, and the next phases will focus on optimizing process efficiency, validating on pilot-scale batches, and preparing for industrial scale-up within a 12-48 month window.
