Company

Innovative probiotics encapsulation using sweet matrices for efficient iron delivery, combining biogenic iron nanoparticle synthesis with fructo-oligosaccharides for enhanced stability, safety, and bioavailability.

Overview

This solution involves the encapsulation of probiotics within sweet matrices to serve as an effective iron delivery system. Utilizing biogenic synthesis, certain probiotic bacteria can produce iron nanoparticles that are stable, environmentally friendly, and non-toxic. These nanoparticles adhere to the bacterial surface or are released into the medium. The use of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) adds nutritional fiber and sweetness while protecting probiotics during drying processes, ensuring safe transport to the gut and enhancing iron bioavailability.

Technical specifications
  • Biogenic Iron Nanoparticles: Synthesized by probiotics, these nanoparticles are 80-125 nm in size and offer increased stability and safety compared to chemically synthesized alternatives.
  • Encapsulation Matrix: Fructo-oligosaccharides protect probiotics during freeze-drying or spray-drying, offering a non-degradable delivery system that enhances iron transport to the gut.
  • Safety and Bioavailability: Toxicity tests confirm safety at concentrations significantly above those used for food fortification. Iron bioavailability was validated using Caco2 TC7 cell assays, outperforming commercial iron sources.
  • Prototype Stability: Current research focuses on assessing prototype stability under various conditions and sensory analysis for consumer acceptability.
Technology readiness level

The solution is at TRL 4, having undergone validation in laboratory settings. Future steps involve stability testing, sensory evaluations, and scalability assessments to advance the development towards commercial readiness.
