A biological pest control solution using endophytic entomopathogenic fungi (Beauveria sp. and Metarhizium sp.) to colonize tomato plant tissues and reduce Tuta absoluta populations. The approach targets a major tomato pest through sustainable, environmentally friendly mechanisms including insect deterrence and antifeedant effects, offering an alternative to chemical pesticides.
This research program develops a sustainable biological control strategy for Tuta absoluta, one of the most destructive lepidopteran pests of tomato crops. The solution leverages entomopathogenic fungi (EPF), specifically Beauveria sp. and Metarhizium sp., as endophytes—organisms that colonize plant tissues internally without causing disease. By establishing EPF within tomato plants, the technology aims to suppress pest populations through multiple mechanisms, including deterrence of oviposition and antifeedant effects on larvae. The work is led by AGROSAVIA, Colombia's leading agricultural research organization, and builds on prior validated results demonstrating successful endophytic colonization of tomato plants and reduced oviposition preference by lepidopteran pests.

Key features:
The research is at an early-to-mid stage of development (TRL 3–4). Prior laboratory work has confirmed successful endophytic colonization of tomato plants by EPF and documented reduced insect oviposition preference. The proposed one-year laboratory study will extend these findings to T. absoluta, validate direct effects on larvae, and establish the foundation for a new pest control strategy. The results are expected to inform field-level integrated pest management recommendations for Colombian tomato growers. The project is seeking funding support for laboratory materials, DNA analysis, behavior experiments, insect rearing, and plant and fungi propagation.
AGROSAVIA is a Colombian decentralized public entity of mixed non-profit participation dedicated to agricultural science, technology, and innovation. The organization focuses on generating scientific knowledge and developing agricultural technology through research, technological adaptation, and the dissemination of technical expertise. Its operations are organized into specialized innovation networks, including cacao, fruits, vegetables, livestock, permanent crops, and roots and tubers. By bridging the gap between advanced research and practical application, AGROSAVIA develops improved crop varieties, such as biofortified beans and sugarcane, and establishes integrated management protocols to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.
These efforts are vital for Colombian agricultural producers, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to improve competitiveness, ensure sustainable natural resource management, and raise their quality of life. Through initiatives like field schools and the provision of technical assistance, the corporation facilitates the transfer of technology and information to small-scale farmers. By fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, AGROSAVIA acts as a key driver for technical change in the national agricultural sector, helping producers modernize their practices and address challenges related to climate resilience and food security.
