Developing high-yield, stress-adapted fonio millet varieties using EMS-induced mutagenesis to expand genetic diversity and improve agricultural traits. This project offers optimized EMS protocols adaptable to other small millets, enhancing food security and economic value.
This research project focuses on the enhancement of fonio millet's genetic base through EMS-induced mutagenesis, aimed at producing high-yield, stress-adapted varieties. By treating fonio seeds with varying concentrations of EMS, novel mutants with desirable traits such as early maturity and improved seed quality are developed. This approach is expected to deliver high-performing fonio lines that are both climate-resilient and industry-preferred, contributing significantly to food security and economic growth.
