Innovative microcapsules using species-specific pheromone and essential oils to attract and lethally incapacitate Periplaneta americana males, ensuring eco-friendly pest control.

Overview

This solution presents an environmentally safe method for controlling Periplaneta americana, commonly known as American cockroaches. The technology utilizes microcapsules that combine species-specific sex pheromones with essential oils, designed to attract and lethally incapacitate male cockroaches. By mimicking the natural pheromone release of female cockroaches, these microcapsules draw males towards them, where they encounter a lethal dose of essential oil, leading to paralysis and death. This approach minimizes environmental impact as the essential oils used are approved for human consumption and the microcapsules are made from food-safe materials.

Technical specifications
  • Microcapsule Composition: Made from silica or polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl pyrrolidone/alginate.
  • Active Ingredients: Minute quantities of the sex pheromone Periplanone-B and essential oils.
  • Mechanism: The pheromone attracts male cockroaches, counteracting any repellent effect of the essential oil, ensuring effective delivery.
  • Efficacy: Proven to reduce cockroach lifespan by over two-thirds in preliminary tests.
  • Safety: Non-toxic components approved for human consumption.
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 3, having been demonstrated in controlled laboratory settings. Further validation is planned, including tests in simulated environments to optimize the dose and assess the effect on male cockroach behavior and mortality rates.

About Agricultural Research Organization

Israel’s Agricultural Research Organization (Volcani Center) is a national research institute that conducts fundamental and applied R&D to advance the country’s agriculture. Industry works with co‑located laboratories, pilot facilities, greenhouses, and experimental farms, and a nationwide network of research stations enables multi‑climate trials. Integration with the Ministry of Agriculture and the public extension service speeds on‑farm validation and knowledge transfer, while proximity to Israel’s agri‑tech ecosystem supports joint development. Research is supported by Israeli national funding and competitive international programs, including European framework funding. A dedicated technology transfer office manages IP, licensing, and collaboration agreements.
