Innovative use of EPS-producing bacteria in lawns and gardens to boost soil carbon sequestration. This technology leverages microbial biofilms to increase soil organic matter and enhance nutrient retention, thus supporting sustainable gardening and landscaping practices.

Overview

This solution introduces the use of bacteria capable of producing exopolymeric substances (EPS) to increase soil carbon capture in lawns and gardens. By integrating these bacteria into soil, the technology enhances the soil's organic carbon content through biofilms that trap carbon and micronutrients. This approach not only reduces carbon loss but also supports the growth of beneficial microbes, promoting sustainable soil health and productivity.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Utilizes EPS-producing bacteria formulated with additives for enhanced growth and EPS production
  • Applied through seeding in wet soil, promoting soil aggregation and water retention
  • Supports the formation of biofilms that protect microbial cells and enhance soil structure
  • Efficacy evaluated through soil organic carbon analysis, soil texture, and biomass measurements
Technology readiness level

This technology is at TRL 5, indicating that it has been validated in a relevant environment. Future validation plans include extensive field testing and data analysis to further compare the efficacy of EPS-producing bacteria against conventional soil treatments.
