Integrating fast-weathering wollastonite into lawn and garden products for carbon sequestration and enhanced plant performance. Proven in greenhouse and field trials, it forms stable soil carbonates, improves nutrient efficiency, and supports climate-smart product lines.
Fast-weathering wollastonite offers a breakthrough in lawn and garden care by integrating into Miracle-Gro formulations to enhance carbon sequestration and plant performance. By reacting within weeks to form stable soil carbonates, wollastonite releases essential nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and silicon. This not only improves the vigor of turfgrass and reduces wilting in leafy vegetables but also works synergistically with nitrogen fertilizers. The resulting wollastonite-urea blend enhances nitrogen-use efficiency, delays ammonia volatilization, and provides controlled nutrient release. Proven in greenhouse and turf field studies, this solution significantly increases biomass, NDVI, and soil inorganic carbon, making it suitable for lawns, urban gardens, and green roofs.
Currently at TRL 5, this technology is validated in relevant environments and is progressing towards TRL 6-7. Future steps include compatibility assessments with existing products, candidate blend designs, and pilot packaging to advance to commercialization.
The University of Guelph is a comprehensive, mid-sized public research university in Guelph, Ontario.
