Feltwood is a patented, chemical-free process that transforms agricultural vegetal waste into industrial-grade, compostable materials that substitute plastics and wood. The technology produces four material grades for furniture, packaging, insulation, and protective applications, offering competitive cost per ton compared to cellulose and plastics.

Overview

Feltwood offers a patented, non-chemical, eco-friendly process that converts agricultural vegetal waste into new industrial materials that are both compostable and substitutive of plastics. The technology addresses the growing demand for sustainable alternatives in manufacturing by valorizing agricultural by-products that would otherwise be discarded. To date, 42 types of vegetal waste have been successfully processed, supporting a wide range of raw material inputs.

The resulting materials deliver strong mechanical and thermal performance suitable for demanding applications. Business model estimations place the cost per ton below cellulose and far below conventional plastics, making Feltwood economically attractive as well as environmentally responsible. The company is headquartered in Zaragoza, Spain, and targets major European markets including Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, and Italy.

Technical specifications

Feltwood's process uses no chemicals, adhesives, or binders, relying instead on a proprietary method to improve the mechanical properties of plant fibers. The technology has been validated through laboratory testing and a prototype production line operating at tens of kilograms per hour, confirming a steady and replicable continuous process.

Key features:

  • 100% plant-based, biodegradable, and compostable output
  • Four material grades tailored to specific applications:
    • Feltwood Hard: very hard, mouldable, and machinable for boards, toys, and furniture
    • Feltwood Pack: strong and resistant material for light packaging
    • Feltwood Insulation: low weight material for thermal insulation
    • Feltwood Anti-impact: protective packaging material

Validated performance metrics:

  • Flexural strength of 76.21 MPa, comparable to PET
  • Ultimate tensile strength of 29 MPa, comparable to PET
  • Vickers hardness of 11.6 HV and Brinell hardness of 20.4 HB
  • Thermal conductivity of 0.019 W/mK, outperforming Rockwool insulation
Technology readiness level

Feltwood has progressed beyond laboratory validation into prototype-scale continuous production. External testing at ICMA and the Aragon Government's Building Quality Laboratory has confirmed key mechanical and thermal properties. The company is now pursuing formal certifications and regulatory validations, including Ok-compost (and BPI in the United States), CE marking for the toy industry, and EFSA validation for food-contact applications. These steps are intended to enable broader commercial deployment across packaging, construction, consumer goods, and insulation markets.
