Novel amino acid ester conjugates of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl that improve selectivity between rice and barnyard grass. The conjugates enhance herbicidal activity while increasing crop safety through improved phloem mobility, offering a new approach for developing safer aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides.
This research presents a series of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl amino acid ester conjugates designed to address selectivity challenges in rice cultivation. The compounds target the differential phloem mobility between rice and barnyard grass, enabling effective weed control while protecting the crop. By conjugating the active herbicide molecule with endogenous phloem-mobile substrates such as amino acids or their esters, the technology offers a strategic approach to developing safer aryloxyphenoxypropionate (APP) herbicides. Early validation demonstrated a 50% increase in herbicidal activity and a 50% improvement in rice safety for the lead compound.
The technology has reached early-stage proof of concept with successful synthesis and initial biological evaluation of the conjugate series. Selectivity enhancement has been demonstrated in comparative testing between barnyard grass and rice. Future work involves expanding the conjugate library, conducting additional biological activity assessments, and further characterizing phloem mobility profiles to advance toward practical herbicide development.
