A low-cost, continuous in-field photosynthesis sensor using solar induced fluorescence (SIF) measured at 690nm and 740nm. Designed as a miniature spectrometer with wireless data transmission, the system enables real-time plant health monitoring as an affordable alternative to expensive portable photosynthesis units.
Measuring photosynthesis in the field is currently expensive, cumbersome, and limited to single-point readings requiring frequent calibration. This project proposes a continuous, low-cost in-field sensor system based on solar induced fluorescence (SIF), a technique validated through academic research and NASA remote sensing programs. By combining a miniature optical sensor with a wireless communications module, the device can be attached directly to a plant leaf while the transmitter is mounted on a nearby pole or tree trunk, delivering uninterrupted photosynthesis data throughout the day. When coupled with soil and air measurements, SIF-based readings provide a critical indicator of plant health within its micro-climate, supporting precision agriculture, arboriculture, viticulture, and environmental monitoring applications.
The underlying science of using solar induced fluorescence to measure photosynthesis has been validated through numerous peer-reviewed studies and by NASA. The current project focuses on engineering a deployable, continuous-monitoring sensor system rather than proving the principle. The development path includes a proof-of-concept phase followed by field testing, iterative refinement, a second field test, and progression toward production. Optical component development is planned in partnership with Zeiss optics at the ZEISS Innovation Hub, while Sinafis will handle the remaining electronics, data transmission, and display infrastructure. Additional collaboration with a research institute or data partner may be pursued to build the data libraries needed to correlate fluorescence measurements with specific plant types.
