Nephelometry provides a sensitive way to detect light scattered by particles in solutions and suspensions. It can be used to measure low levels of turbidity, detect particle formation, evaluate solubility, and monitor how these properties evolve over time.

Different applications may require different wavelengths, sample volumes, or measurement conditions. A flexible measurement system allows nephelometric testing to adapt as research and analytical needs evolve.

Flexible Nephelometry with NEPHEL.O™

NEPHEL.O™ is a modular nephelometer designed to measure scattered light and turbidity in solutions and suspensions.

The system uses interchangeable optical cartridges, allowing users to select different wavelengths according to their applications and add new configurations as testing requirements evolve. Measurements can be performed at a single point or continuously to capture time-dependent kinetics.

How the Technology Works

NEPHEL.O™ directs a laser beam through the sample and measures the light scattered at 90°. Interchangeable emission cartridges are available at 850, 635, 520, and 405 nm.

Different sample holders accommodate volumes ranging from 250 µL PCR tubes to 10 mL vials. Experimental data can be acquired, organized, and analyzed through the Soft Matter Analytics™ software.

What This Enables
  • Measurement of low-turbidity solutions
  • Detection and quantification of particle formation
  • Single-point or time-dependent kinetic measurements
  • Solubility and dissolution studies
  • Measurements at application-specific wavelengths
  • Adaptation to different sample volumes and formats
  • Expansion of optical configurations as applications evolve
  • Collection and analysis of experimental data
Potential Applications

NEPHEL.O™ can support applications involving low turbidity, particle formation, and solubility across research, formulation development, and Quality Control.

Applications include pharmaceutical compound solubility and dissolution studies, determination of solubility points, low-turbidity measurements, suspension analysis, particle detection, and other applications where scattered-light measurements can provide information about changes in a liquid sample.

Technology Readiness

NEPHEL.O™ is a commercially available modular nephelometer. Its performance on low-turbidity solutions has been compared with an established commercial nephelometer, demonstrating precise and repeatable measurements.

The technology has also been used to evaluate pharmaceutical compound solubility and determine the solubility point of compounds in liquids.

Partnership Opportunities

We are interested in connecting with research and industry partners exploring applications where nephelometric measurement of turbidity, particle formation, solubility, or time-dependent changes could support R&D, formulation development, analytical testing, or Quality Control.

About Rheolution

Rheolution designs and manufactures analytical lab instruments and IoT-enabled solutions for soft matter analytics, primarily serving the life sciences and agri-food sectors. Founded in 2009, the company develops smart, non-invasive, and modular testing platforms that utilize patented technologies—such as the CoaguSens series for viscoelasticity testing—to capture the dynamic evolution of live soft materials. By digitalizing the testing process, Rheolution provides high-precision data acquisition tools that integrate hardware with data-centric software, including its collaborative, no-code data analysis platform, nuVerve. These technologies allow researchers and industrial teams to move beyond raw data collection toward actionable insights.

These tools are essential for customers focused on R&D, quality assurance, and process control, as they provide critical information on the viscoelastic properties of biomaterials, medical devices, and food products. By replacing traditional, often limited testing methods, Rheolution helps its users optimize production, improve yield, and fast-track innovation projects. The company, headquartered in Montreal, Canada, supports its global clientele through a combination of hardware innovation, specialized technical support, and customized testing protocols tailored to unique application requirements.
