FLOSSI-BEE© is a behavioral intervention using the 4th generation multi-theory model (MTM) to enhance flossing habits among minority adolescents. This theory-based approach outperforms knowledge-based methods by focusing on behavior change and MTM constructs.

Overview

FLOSSI-BEE© is an innovative intervention program designed to improve flossing behaviors among minority adolescents in the United States. The program leverages the 4th generation multi-theory model (MTM) of health behavior change, a robust and tested framework, to promote and sustain positive oral health practices. By targeting key MTM constructs, FLOSSI-BEE© aims to initiate and maintain flossing behavior effectively, addressing social determinants of health as highlighted in the Healthy People 2030 Report.

Technical specifications

FLOSSI-BEE© involves a structured intervention process that includes:

  • A three-week pilot randomized control trial (RCT) with an eight-week follow-up period.
  • Participants are randomly assigned to either an experimental group, which receives MTM-based interventions, or a comparison group with knowledge-based sessions.
  • The experimental group engages in face-to-face or virtual presentations and group sessions that focus on MTM constructs, while the comparison group receives traditional lecture-driven sessions.
  • The efficacy of the intervention is measured through pretests, post-tests, and eight-week follow-ups to document changes in flossing frequency and MTM constructs.
Technology readiness level

The FLOSSI-BEE© program is currently at Technology Readiness Level 3. It is in the early stages of validation, with a focus on assessing its effectiveness through a pilot study involving a randomized control trial.
