Innovative fluorine-free plasma nanocoating technology for paper packaging offers superior moisture and grease resistance with minimal non-fibre content, enhancing paper handling and recyclability. Ideal for flexible packaging applications without using PFAS or traditional laminates.

Overview

Flinders University presents an innovative solution to improve the barrier properties of paper-based flexible packaging through a fluorine-free plasma nanocoating technology. This cutting-edge approach provides a robust hydrophobic surface, achieving moisture and grease resistance while maintaining the paper-like handling qualities essential for packaging applications. This technology is substrate-independent and designed to integrate seamlessly with existing manufacturing processes, making it a practical choice for industries seeking sustainable and effective packaging solutions without relying on PFAS, PE, PET, or aluminum foil.

Technical specifications
  • Fluorine-free plasma polymer coating: Offers superior hydrophobicity with less than 50 nm thickness, ensuring minimal impact on paper feel and flexibility.
  • High barrier performance: Provides exceptional water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), grease resistance, and durability.
  • Substrate independence: Compatible with a variety of commercial paper substrates, ensuring wide applicability.
  • Scalability: Plasma polymer deposition is scalable and tunable for adhesion and durability, suitable for roll-to-roll production processes.
  • Recyclability: Minimal non-fibre content facilitates recyclability, aligning with sustainable packaging objectives.
Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 5, this technology has been validated in relevant environments. Future validation steps include substrate selection, initial coating and barrier testing, forming simulation, and scale-up assessments to ensure performance retention through manufacturing processes.
