A disposable surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate combining transition metal clusters and metal nanocontainers for rapid, sensitive detection of acrylamide. Designed as a simple drop-test consumable for food safety applications, with potential to expand to additional chemical moieties.
This solution delivers a functionalised surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate built on a disposable plasmonics platform enhanced with transition metal clusters (TMCs) and metal nanocontainers (MNs). The combination amplifies the sensitivity and specificity of the SERS response toward target molecules, enabling rapid detection of acrylamide through a simple drop-test consumable format. The approach offers food industry stakeholders a practical, field-deployable alternative to conventional laboratory testing for acrylamide and other chemical moieties of interest.
The underlying disposable plasmonic substrate technology has been demonstrated in recent work on SERS detection of chiral compounds, providing proof-of-concept validation for the platform. The chemical binding behaviour of transition metals with organic moieties responsive to nitrogen and oxygen coordination has been previously characterised, and Raman spectroscopy has been shown to be effective for studying related metal-organic framework reactions and selective adsorption events. Future validation will involve evaluating acrylamide interactions with candidate transition metals, synthesising bespoke TMCs and MNs, coating them onto optimised disposable plasmonic substrates, and testing performance across varying acrylamide concentrations using a commercial Raman microscope. The team is open to pursuing additional funding to complement industrial collaborator investment.
PinPoint Medical is a UK-based medical technology company established in 2018 that specializes in developing advanced diagnostic and environmental monitoring solutions. The company utilizes proprietary biosensing technology and nano-scale detection systems to address critical challenges in healthcare, including rapid, non-invasive prostate cancer screening and the monitoring of airborne pathogens. Their primary technology platform, the Advanced Disposable Plasmonic Assay (DPA) biosensor, is designed for high-precision, real-time detection of multiple infectious agents. This sensor technology is integrated into their intelligent Air Quality (iAQ) platform, a modular system engineered to clean air and monitor for disease-related pathogens in clinical, laboratory, and public environments.
By focusing on early detection and real-time environmental management, PinPoint Medical aims to improve patient outcomes and enhance public safety. Their solutions offer a cost-effective, high-throughput alternative to traditional, more expensive diagnostic methods, helping clinicians and facilities maintain safer environments. The company, led by CEO Jason Donnelly and CTO Dr. Affar Karimullah, combines research expertise in nanotechnology and biomedical engineering to develop its product ecosystem. Their work is supported by a multi-disciplinary team that manages the end-to-end development of sensors, readers, and software platforms for automated reporting and infection control.
