Polyethylglyoxylate (PEtG) is a biodegradable polymer that can be modified for diverse delivery applications. It is tunable for degradation rates and surface properties, making it ideal for active compound delivery.

Overview

Polyethylglyoxylate (PEtG) is a groundbreaking biodegradable polymer designed for versatile delivery applications. This metastable plastic can be easily functionalized through transesterification, allowing the incorporation of various functional groups. These modifications enable the polymer to carry active compounds and adjust its surface energy for effective deposition on different substrates. One of the remarkable features of PEtG is its tunable degradation rate, ranging from hours to days, with innocuous byproducts such as ethanol and glyoxylic acid hydrate, making it environmentally friendly.

Technical specifications

PEtG's unique properties arise from its low ceiling temperature of approximately 33°C, which favors depolymerization into ethyl glyoxylate monomers at higher temperatures. Despite its metastable nature, PEtG can be kinetically stabilized, ensuring shelf stability. The polymer can degrade rapidly under stimuli like light, heat, or chemical triggers. The versatility of PEtG is enhanced through transesterification reactions, allowing the introduction of cationic or other functional groups. This modification process is crucial for optimizing the polymer's performance in delivering active compounds to substrates with varying hydrophobicity.

Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 3, indicating that it has been demonstrated in a laboratory setting. The next phases involve optimizing synthesis protocols and transesterification reactions, as well as testing the delivery capabilities of modified PEtG (PEtG+) on different substrates. Ongoing collaborations and external testing will further refine these polymers for specific applications.
