Company

FuraCore PEF is a 100% bio-based, fully recyclable packaging material that outperforms PET in strength-to-weight ratio, thermal stability, and gas barrier properties. It supports lightweight packaging, hot-fill and reusable applications, and maintains barrier performance in humid environments, making it ideal for sustainable packaging in global markets.

Overview

FuraCore PEF (PolyEthylene Furanoate) is a 100% bio-based packaging material designed as a high-performance alternative to petroleum-based PET. Developed by Stora Enso, FuraCore PEF delivers superior strength-to-weight efficiency, enabling lightweight packaging that reduces raw material use, logistics costs, and transportation-related emissions. Its enhanced thermal properties make it suitable for hot-fill applications and reusable packaging that requires hot washing, while its superior barrier performance against carbon dioxide, water vapor, and oxygen extends product shelf life. Critically, FuraCore PEF retains its barrier properties in humid conditions, making it especially valuable for tropical and subtropical markets where demand for sustainable packaging is rapidly growing.

Technical specifications
  • Lightweight strength: Higher strength-to-weight ratio than PET, enabling material reduction and lower transportation costs and emissions.
  • Thermal performance: Withstands higher temperatures than PET, supporting hot-fill processes and hot-wash cycles for reusable bottles and containers.
  • Superior gas barriers: Improved barrier properties against CO2, water vapor, and oxygen, extending shelf life of packaged products.
  • Humidity resistance: Maintains high barrier performance even at elevated humidity levels, addressing a key limitation of many bio-based alternatives.
  • Drop-in recyclability: Compatible with existing PET recycling streams; identifiable through near-infrared sorting and processable alongside PET, allowing converters and brand owners to integrate it without major infrastructure changes.
Technology readiness level

FuraCore PEF is currently at the pilot stage. Stora Enso's pilot plant in Langerbrugge, Belgium, is commissioned and operational, producing the key monomer FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid). The company is actively collaborating with partners and research institutes to advance the polymerization of PEF. Within a 4–5 year horizon, Stora Enso aims to construct the first commercial-scale plant with an annual capacity of 50–70 kilotons, marking the transition from pilot validation to full commercial production.
