Graphene oxide and graphene oxide/montmorillonite hybrid coatings applied to polyethylene and polypropylene films deliver dramatic reductions in UV transmittance and gas permeability while enabling recyclability of mono-material flexible packaging.

Overview

This solution introduces graphene oxide (GO) and graphene oxide/montmorillonite (GO/MMT) hybrid coatings that transform standard low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) films into high-performance barrier packaging. Applied via a rod coater, the coatings deliver a 40–60% reduction in UV transmittance at 400 nm, a 94–99% reduction in oxygen permeability, and a 68–73% reduction in water vapor permeability. Because the coated films remain mono-material constructions, they are recyclable by design, addressing a critical limitation of current commercial multilayer barrier films that are widely considered non-recyclable.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Barrier performance: Oxygen permeability reduced by 94–99% and water vapor permeability reduced by 68–73% on LDPE and PP substrates
  • UV shielding: 40–60% reduction in transmittance at 400 nm wavelength, protecting light-sensitive contents
  • Substrate compatibility: Validated on 70 µm corona-treated LDPE and 50 µm corona-treated PP films with surface tension above 38 dyne/cm
  • Coating chemistry: Aqueous GO dispersion (4.5 g/L) combined with Cloisite Na+ montmorillonite clay to form hybrid barrier layers
  • Application method: Scalable rod-coater deposition producing flexible coated films approximately 10 cm wide and 30 cm long
  • Durability: Stable barrier performance maintained after prolonged water immersion, with demonstrated reprocessing and recyclability of the coated films
Technology readiness level

The coatings have been validated at laboratory scale on commercially supplied LDPE and PP cast films, with barrier, optical, mechanical flexibility, water immersion stability, and recyclability measurements already completed. The technology is ready for pilot-scale demonstration and partner co-development to evaluate performance in real packaging formats and to optimize coating parameters for industrial production lines.

About AREEO

AREEO is Iran’s national agricultural research, education, and extension organization, coordinating a comprehensive country‑wide system of institutes, provincial research and education centers, and field stations. Co‑located experimental farms and research stations enable rapid field validation and scale‑up, while an extensive extension network connects results directly to producers and agri‑industry. For commercialization, AREEO operates research incubation centers and supports knowledge‑based enterprises that engage with private partners. Research is primarily supported by national government programs through the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, with additional competitive funding and international collaborations.
