Green supercritical CO2 remediation for coconut water

Company

Low-cost, clean upcycled CO2 extraction technology that removes unwanted organic compounds from coconut water while preserving sugars and electrolytes. Leverages 31 years of supercritical fluid expertise for natural beverage processing.

Overview

This solution uses supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) extraction in a counter-current column to remediate unwanted organic compounds from coconut water without altering its desirable nutritional profile. Because CO2 is a non-polar solvent, it selectively dissolves off-flavor and aroma compounds such as aldehydes, lactones, benzothiazoles, and alcohols while leaving water-soluble sugars (maintaining the standard brix of 5.0) and electrolyte salts completely intact. The process is green and cost-effective because the CO2 is upcycled from industrial sources and recycled in a closed loop, eliminating residual solvent contamination in the final product.

Technical specifications
  • Supercritical CO2 extraction performed in a counter-current column operating in liquid-liquid extraction mode
  • Selective solubility: non-polar compounds migrate into the CO2 phase while polar compounds remain in the aqueous phase
  • Upcycled and recycled CO2 sourced from industrial streams, reducing cost and environmental impact
  • Preservation of standard of identity for coconut water, including sugar content and electrolyte balance
  • In-house analytics including HPLC-UV-MS for identification and quantification of key compounds
  • Design of experiments covering full operating parameter space, including pressure, temperature, and flow rates, mapped to measurable responses such as undesirable compound removal, retention of desirable compounds, and process yield
  • Applicable process know-how drawn from commercial deployments in fish oil deodorization, flavor removal from alcoholic beverages, citrus oil deterpenation, and apple aroma fractionation
Technology readiness level

The underlying supercritical CO2 platform is commercially proven across multiple food, nutraceutical, and beverage applications, with Thar Process operating USDA Organic and FDA-registered toll processing facilities. The specific application to coconut water remediation is at the experimental validation stage, with planned design-of-experiments studies and analytical characterization to confirm selectivity, yield, and finished-product quality before commercial scale-up.

About Thar Process

Thar Process is a global technology and services company specializing in supercritical CO2 extraction and purification solutions. Founded in 1990 and based in Pittsburgh, the company engineers and fabricates specialized equipment, such as SuperFast extraction systems and Isolator supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) systems. These technologies enable sustainable, solvent-free processing by utilizing upcycled CO2 to separate and isolate high-value molecules, including natural products, pharmaceutical APIs, and synthetic compounds. Their operations span from laboratory-scale R&D to large industrial-scale production, supported by certified cGMP, USDA Organic, Kosher, and Halal facilities.

By replacing traditional hydrocarbon-based processes with green, supercritical technologies, Thar Process helps customers in the nutraceutical, food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries create safer, cleaner products. The company offers contract R&D and toll processing services, providing a single-point-of-access for businesses looking to improve product quality and sustainability without the capital expenditure of building their own systems. Thar Process works with clients on five continents to solve complex challenges in sterilization, impregnation, and material remediation, adhering to its core principles of People, Planet, and Profit.
