Research-driven insights into postbiotics — inanimate microorganisms and their components — as a stable, safer alternative to probiotics and antibiotics in animal production, with focus on gut health benefits and bioactive components such as exopolysaccharides, teichoic acids, surface layer proteins, and bacterial DNA.

Overview

Postbiotics are preparations of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confer health benefits on the host. This research examines the gut health benefits and practical applications of postbiotics as a promising alternative to traditional probiotics and antibiotics in animal production. By leveraging non-living microbial components, postbiotics offer improved stability, safety, and ease of handling compared to live probiotic formulations.

The work addresses key knowledge gaps around the precise composition of postbiotic preparations and the mechanisms by which individual bioactive components contribute to gut health. Outcomes from this research will support more confident and effective use of postbiotics across livestock and aquaculture systems, helping producers reduce reliance on antibiotics while maintaining animal performance and welfare.

Technical specifications

Core technology focus:

  • Characterization of postbiotic preparations including Tyndallized probiotics, heat-killed probiotics, paraprobiotics, and bacterial lysates
  • Identification and analysis of key bioactive components such as exopolysaccharides, wall polysaccharides, teichoic acids (wall teichoic acids and lipoteichoic acids), surface layer proteins, and bacterial DNA
  • Investigation of mechanisms by which individual postbiotic factors influence gut health and host immunity

Key advantages:

  • Greater stability and safety compared to live probiotics due to the inanimate nature of the components
  • Potential to reduce antibiotic use in animal production systems
  • Applicable across multiple animal production contexts including livestock and aquaculture
Technology readiness level

This research is at an early stage, focused on clarifying the definition and composition of postbiotics and validating the gut health benefits of specific bioactive components. Current efforts center on literature consolidation, component identification, and mechanistic investigation. Future validation will involve further characterization of postbiotic preparations and targeted studies to confirm the efficacy of individual components in promoting gut health, laying the groundwork for applied trials in animal production settings.

About AREEO

AREEO is Iran’s national agricultural research, education, and extension organization, coordinating a comprehensive country‑wide system of institutes, provincial research and education centers, and field stations. Co‑located experimental farms and research stations enable rapid field validation and scale‑up, while an extensive extension network connects results directly to producers and agri‑industry. For commercialization, AREEO operates research incubation centers and supports knowledge‑based enterprises that engage with private partners. Research is primarily supported by national government programs through the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, with additional competitive funding and international collaborations.
