Company

Ex Seed offers high molecular weight poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) films produced from green methanol, providing a sustainable alternative for packaging applications with mechanical properties comparable to conventional polyesters.

Overview

Ex Seed presents a groundbreaking solution for the packaging industry through the production of high molecular weight poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) films using green methanol as a feedstock. This innovative approach results in biodegradable films with mechanical properties that rival traditional synthetic polyesters like poly-L-lactides, polypropylene, and polyethylene. The sustainable nature of PHB, combined with its high purity obtained through a solvent-free downstream process, positions it as an ideal candidate for a variety of packaging applications, particularly in the food industry.

Technical specifications
  • Feedstock: Utilizes methanol, a sustainable carbon source, for fermentation.
  • Production Process: Employs a novel fermentation method to yield high molecular weight PHB (>1000kDA).
  • Downstream Processing: Solvent-free, ensuring high purity of the final product.
  • Applications: Targeted for use in packaging, especially for solid and liquid food items.
  • Packaging Forms: Converted into films suitable for diverse packaging needs.
Technology readiness level

This innovative PHB production technology is currently at TRL 4, having been validated in laboratory settings with plans to scale to 1000L fermentation batches for market testing and collaboration with industrial partners.

About Ex Seed

Founded in 2023, Ex Seed is a deep-tech food startup from Bulgaria focusing on plant protein innovation. The founders combined chemical engineering expertise with a sustainability ethos to tackle waste from sunflower oil production – a significant industry in Eastern Europe. Ex Seed is part of an incubator program and is gaining attention for promoting sunflower protein as the next big plant protein.
