Drone-based multispectral imaging system that replaces manual field measurements with automated assessment of winter survival, canopy height, yield potential, and disease traits in winter wheat breeding programs.

Overview

This solution delivers a high-throughput phenotyping platform that uses unmanned aerial system (UAS) multispectral imagery to accelerate and standardize trait measurement in winter wheat breeding. By replacing labor-intensive visual ratings and manual measurements with remote sensing analytics, breeders can evaluate large numbers of pure lines more efficiently and consistently. The approach has been validated over two growing seasons and is positioned to scale to thousands of accessions drawn from diverse germplasm collections.

Technical specifications

Core measurement capabilities:

  • Winter survival index (WSI) derived from vegetation fraction calculated from UAS imagery, validated as a statistically significant substitute for visual ratings
  • Canopy height extracted through change analysis of digital surface models between flight dates
  • Grain yield prediction using remotely sensed spectral indices correlated with plot performance
  • Disease scouting for fusarium head blight and stripe rust in years with favorable nursery conditions
  • Genotyping integration with DNA molecular markers to score disease resistance loci

Breeding pipeline integration:

  • Compatible with augmented designs (MAD2) and lattice yield trial layouts
  • Data analysis conducted in R and Genovix software for breeding value estimation
  • Supports germplasm grouping by agronomic characteristics including winter survival, heading date, anthesis, maturity, and height
  • Designed for multi-season replicated yield plots of pure lines derived from world collections
Technology readiness level

The technology has completed two years of validation yield trials covering 22 genotypes across both seasons, with statistically significant correlations (p<0.05) between UAS-derived survival estimates and ground-truth measurements. Current results have been favorable enough to replace manual measurement workflows in the winter wheat breeding pipeline. Near-term validation will scale the platform to approximately 1,000 accessions sourced from the Plant Gene Resource of Canada, planted in modified augmented designs, with continued refinement of disease detection and molecular marker integration.
