Hybrid lithium-sulfur and supercapacitor system for electric vehicles

Technology
Conceptual
Company

This hybrid system integrates lithium-sulfur batteries with supercapacitors to enhance the energy and power density of heavy-duty electric vehicles, improving battery lifespan and reducing system weight and size through optimized energy management.

Overview

The hybrid lithium-sulfur and supercapacitor system is designed to revolutionize energy storage for heavy-duty electric vehicles (HDEVs). By combining the high energy density of lithium-sulfur batteries with the excellent cycle life and power density of supercapacitors, this technology aims to improve battery lifespan and vehicle performance. The innovation results in a lighter, more compact energy storage solution, optimizing energy distribution and reducing stress on the battery during high-power demands.

Technical specifications
  • Lithium-sulfur batteries: Offer high theoretical energy density and cost-effectiveness but suffer from limited cycle life due to polysulfide shuttling and cathode degradation.
  • Supercapacitors: Provide excellent cycle life and power density, storing energy electrostatically, which complements the lithium-sulfur batteries.
  • Hybrid integration: Utilizes power electronics and management systems to optimize the complementary characteristics of lithium-sulfur batteries and supercapacitors.
  • Energy management: The system dynamically distributes energy, using supercapacitors for peak power demands while reserving lithium-sulfur batteries for steady energy supply, thus prolonging battery life.
Technology readiness level

Currently, the technology is at TRL 2, focusing on the definition of primary research objectives and the design of a prototype system. The project aims to build a functional prototype within two years, incorporating real-life heavy-duty vehicle cycle data for development and testing.

About Ex Seed

Founded in 2023, Ex Seed is a deep-tech food startup from Bulgaria focusing on plant protein innovation. The founders combined chemical engineering expertise with a sustainability ethos to tackle waste from sunflower oil production – a significant industry in Eastern Europe. Ex Seed is part of an incubator program and is gaining attention for promoting sunflower protein as the next big plant protein.
